My webcam is broken so recording a video outside today. There’s a little cameo from my cat partway through 🙂
We bought my son a little toy robot for Christmas and it suddenly stopped working. When I looked into it I discovered the batteries had leaked inside the robot. The leak must have damaged him permanently because I wasn’t able to bring him back to life.
But this got me thinking about how this relates to our websites. The fact is when something is broken but it is invisible we don’t even know it is there and so we don’t seek to get it fixed until it is too late.
I really wanted to help my clients work out all the invisible things that were preventing users from converting on their websites – those things that we just can’t “see” but are happening day in, day out on your website. I created a new report called the Detailed Interaction Report specifically for this purpose. With this report, we’re finding all the places where there are problems on the website. So we can find out where people might be clicking on the website multiple times and perhaps they’re not getting the result they expect. We can find out which specific things on your website are leading to high levels of abandonment.
Basically, we have a whole series of different graphs that find all the places have problems.
I know it works because I’ve delivered a few of these reports now and they always discover anomalies where we had no idea that users were leaving from these particular places.
One particular example was an ecommerce client who had a search field on his website, and every time someone searched for a particular product by name the artificial intelligence algorithm changed the search text to “extremely die” and then showed different products entirely. We could see a spike for this search term where people were repeatedly trying to search but unable to find what they wanted.

You don’t know what you don’t know.
